Here today for your consideration we have this superb Victorian solid 18ct yellow gold brooch, featuring a large central banded agate cabochon, likely Scottish c-1880. The gold is of matte finish with rope detail, with the banded agate having beautiful colouring and grain throughout. Condition is good used, with no damage to the gold evident and the pin holding good tension within the catch. The reverse of the cabochon shows a shallow drilled hole with fracture, indicating this piece may have originally housed an internal compartment (likely for hair as a mourning piece). The brooch is without hallmark, and has been XRF tested to confirm purity. A very attractive and large brooch for the collection.
The agate measures approximately 45mm x 35mm and is estimated to be around 135cts, with the brooch having an overall size of 56mm x 47mm. Unpacked, it weighs in at a very respectable 32.28gms.
